Thazin High School
Our new high school in Thazin, on the Bay of Bengal, was built in collaboration with architects Julia and Hellmut Raff. With seven classrooms and a teachers' room, the school offers space for around 350 students up to high school graduation.
A central pavilion connects the high school with the primary school, the library and the new headmaster's house. Outside of school hours, the pavilion can be used as a meeting place and for events for the entire village. The school is two-storied and built in a combination of local materials such as brick and bamboo on a solid concrete foundation. By demolishing the old wooden school, the still good wood could be used for the new school and for the school furniture of the 350 students. Almost all of the construction workers came from Thazin and the surrounding area. Thus, paid jobs were created for unemployed Burmese for many months.
