The traditionally conflict-ridden Nordshan is severely affected by the current political, humanitarian and economic catastrophe. One of the consequences of this development is the forced recruitment of young girls aged 13 and up. The recruiting agencies of the various armed groups put pressure on parents and ensure that at least one child per family is provided, usually a girl. To prevent this, parents send their children to the safe custody outside of North Shan at a young age. Alternatively, they marry off their children young to avoid forced recruitment.

Project Burma financed the purchase of a large monastery building, in which 80 girls from the Nordshan now have a safe place to stay until they have completed their education. Two nuns take care of the children with great dedication and skill and have so far been able to cover the running costs from incoming donations.

What is special about this project is that the two nuns also enable the girls to receive a normal school education in addition to a Buddhist one, so that they can stand on their own two feet and also choose a life outside the monastery.
